Top Five: Anime Openings

DISCLAIMER: This is all based on personal opinion and preferences of the writer.

I’ve been watching anime for most of my life. I remember my first anime being Digimon: Digital Monsters and I still sing the intro randomly when I need a pick-me-up.

Anime openings are a mix of visuals and music. They’re basically music videos before, let’s be honest here, and we all have our favorite music videos and songs which change all the time. So I’m going to tell you all my current top five anime openings with some honorable mentions. There may just as well be a running theme with my tastes.

5. Gintama: Tougenkyou Alien (Opening Nine)

Probably my favorite opening from one of my favorite anime out there, we’ve got this! All the characters, old and new, front and center through this whole thing! The chaos they bring wherever they go! As I’m saying this, I’m twitching to go watch it all over again. This show made me laugh when I didn’t feel like I could even smile. Not for everyone, I think, as a lot of its jokes are tied into Japanese pop culture, life and culture in general so some things go completely over most Westerner’s heads. There are some things that I don’t know the context of but the way it’s delivered in funny regardless.

I have rambled on about my love for the show for most of this.

The video is funny and the song is definitely uplifting if not catchy. It sets up the entire mood of the show so freaking well in just a minute and a half! Have I mentioned I love this anime? I love this anime.

4. Drifters: Gospel of the Throttle

Created by Kouta Hirano, same writer that gave us Hellsing, this anime had about several things I love in my animation. Gore, history and fantasy. What’s not to love? The jokes are awkward af, but I came for the battle scenes and boy did he deliver! It’s got the art I loved from Hellsing too as well as those two mysterious characters that make you ask so many questions and you keep on watching hoping to get some answers. And I repeat, the battle scenes. Intense and glorious.

The video itself is a work of art. I love the rock mixed with elements of the anime, from blood to dragons, warfare and a pinch of comic relief. My favorite part would be the close-up to the characters as they fight! Had me singing along.

3.1 Cowboy Bebop: Tank!

Three, two, one, let’s jam!

This iconic anime of course has an iconic opening. If you haven’t watched Cowboy Bebop, what the fuck are you doing right now? Watch it! Seriously! Spike is the kind of MC you can’t help but love! Become like me who denies the ending and always will!

But seriously, the opening is very much in connection with the mood, time and art of the whole show. The music is enigmatic and fitting of our characters and the music is exciting and gets you so ready to see these space cowboys continue their adventures! Also, there’s a dog in it. What more do you need?

3.2 Tokyo Ghoul: Unravel

Yes. A tie. Don’t expect a lot of these.

I honest to gods above could not pick between these two. Both from different times in anime and both iconic in their own ways. I cry every time I hear this opening because all the feelings from finishing this anime just rush back and I am hurt and in need of ice-cream.

The images are explosive and relaxing at the same time in the intro and the music is soft and haunting and melodious at the exact same time. That’s honestly the best way I can think to describe it. It’s all so intense.

2. Death Parade: Flyers

From what I’ve seen, not a lot of people know about this anime and that’s honestly so sad.

I don’t know how to explain it without spoiling it, as the opening is on the deceiving end of things. Different mood to the whole show but definitely an awesome reference to what plays out in it as well as the title.

The opening itself opens in an upbeat note, with the characters all shown and then it picks up from there. It’s fun and energetic and makes you think of, well, a parade. I thought carnival, but potato, pot-tah-to.

I do get sad whenever I finish listening to it though. There’s no second season and I feel like there wouldn’t be. It’s one of the really sad and discouraging things about the anime industry but that’s a discussion for another day.

Attack on Titan Season Two: Shinzou wo Sasageyo!

Naruto: GO!!!

Parasyte The Maxim: Let Me Hear

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood: Again

1. One Punch Man: The Hero!! Set Fire To The Furious Fist

I’m such a geek, I love it.

Not usually the top in a lot of anime fans’ lists, from what I’ve seen, but usually the top for me. Why? Because Saitama is only my favorite character of all time (tied with Gintoki but it switches between the two)! He’s with this mysterious power and all he wants to do is pay rent and buy food and honestly, boo, same. I think I’ve watched the whole first season up to ten times already.

Just watch the video with me. I’m having a fanboy moment, can barely type coherently. I am unbelievably overexcited for season two.

If you disagree with this list well…I mean…not judging (hardcore judgement). This is just generally what I’m into in terms of anime intros. This or atmospheric shit when I just want to relax. At least for the moment.

What’s your favorite anime opening? Do you have one? Or more? Do you even watch anime? Let me know in the comments and see you next Thursday for another Top Five list!
